It was the early 90's when I first realized that Portugal could make red wine in the world. Sure ... port wines, I had an eye on, and it was there the light thirst savers from Vinho Verde (and Mateus Rosé course!). But when it came to good red wine it was mostly about little easier and basement fragrant austere wines that worked well for the pasta at home in the dorm.
But then I tried Barca Velha, the wine that came to be the trendsetter for the Portuguese "table wines" - that is, ordinary red wines that are not reinforced with alcohol. Barca Velha is just exceptional years (only 16 vintages were bottled since 1952). Unfortunately I will not remember what vintage it was (definitely should have been one of the 80th century vintages) but I cam by the almost fabulous concentration and tasty judgment - as a dry port without excessive alcohol, wedding hairstyles and having a balance wedding hairstyles that I had not previously known in Portuguese wines.

Personally, I have now made an end of the small layer of Aneto Douro 2004 that I bought for me a few years ago. It's a shame because it was and is a great wine - but the wine's made to be drunk.
Francisco Montenegro (winemaker at Quinta Nova) is the man behind Aneto. He started with 7 acres Alijo Douro Valley in 2001 and the first vintage was in 2002. Since then there has also been a white wine, Aneto Branco.
Aneto 2004 Douro A blend of Touriga tacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao. Rich concentrated flavors of dark berries, dishes, mint and other herbs. Little touch of chocolate. Good fresh fruit flavor where the oak adds another dimension (and not dominate). Long aftertaste and focused acids.
