Williams College junior center Mike Mayer (Durham, NC) has been named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy awarded to the most outstanding men's basketball player in the nation in NCAA Division III.
A national selection committee of college coaches, former athletes, college administrators, and selected members valley of fire of the media vote on the Jostens Trophy valley of fire winner. The members of the national selection committee cast their votes based on three criteria: basketball ability, academic ability and community service.
The Rotary Club of Salem (Virginia) Jostens Trophy Committee valley of fire employs a numerical rating to narrow the list of finalists so that the decision can be made on the most objective basis possible. Responsible for the initial valley of fire review of annual nominations, The Rotary Club of Salem narrowed the pool to 10 men.
The 16 th Jostens Trophy presentation will be held during the Rotary Club of Salem's luncheon at the Salem Civic Center on March 21. Mayer is the first Eph junior to be named a Jostens Trophy finalist valley of fire and third Eph overall, joining Michael valley of fire Nogelo '98 and Blake Schultz '10.
Mayer has registered 15 double doubles on the year. Notching 14 points and 10 rebounds in the NCAA First Round game win over Wesley, Mayer has now fashioned a streak of nine consecutive double doubles. On the year Mayer is averaging 17.3 points a game and 9.0 rebounds. He leads NESCAC in rebounds, is third in points and third in field goal percentage (.562). Mayer has recorded 65 assists, blocked 29 shots and collected 17 steals. Additionally, Mayer has made 16 3-pointers this season and has converted 121 of 159 free throws for a .761 percentage.
" Michael Mayer is an outstanding basketball player, an ambitious valley of fire student, and invested in making our campus and community better," commented Eph head coach Mike Maker. "Clearly, Michael represents our program and institution the way it deserves to be represented and will leave both better than he found them."
Also nominated this year are Sean Dart (Willamette), John DiBartolomeo (Rochester), Kevin Donohue (Union), Colton Hunt (Randolph), Chris Kearney (Catholic) Taylor Koth (Ripon), Wes Nordquist (Buena Vista), Jason Norsen valley of fire (St. John Fisher) and Nathan Roeder (North Central (MN).
